Step Parent Adoption
If you would like to adopt your significant other’s child, you may complete a step parent adoption, a domestic partner adoption, or a second parent adoption. This process allows the second parent to appear on the child’s birth certificate.
If you are married, you will complete a stepparent adoption. Some counties require that you be married for at least 1 year.
If you a registered as a couple, you may complete a domestic partner adoption.
If you are neither married nor registered, you’ll complete a second parent adoption. Some counties do not allow this, and you may need the assistance of an attorney.
Each of these adoptions can be accomplished in conjunction with a readoption so that you only have to appear in court once, or they can be entirely separate.
As a licensed agency, we can walk you through how to complete this process without an attorney. We are also happy to work cooperatively with your attorney if you already have one.
